Patriotic Crafts and Printables

Over 1000 Fun Gardens To Explore This Summer (UK)

From woodland walks and wildlife sanctuaries to model railways, farm animals and tractor safaris, there is plenty for the whole family to enjoy at more than 1,000 gardens which will be opening to the public with The National Gardens Scheme across England and Wales during the summer school holidays. And the good news is that it won’t break the bank with the average admission price only £3 and more than 900 gardens offering free entry to children 16 and under.

Nature trails, quizzes and games are also being laid on specifically with children in mind – so there will be no excuses for spending the glorious summer days in front of the telly.
You’ll also get the satisfaction of knowing you are raising money for good causes. The NGS opens 3,600 gardens to the public every year (most of them private) raising around £2 million for Macmillan Cancer Support (they are their biggest single donor), Marie Curie Cancer Care, Help the Hospices, Crossroads – Caring for Carers and other charities.

Chris Collins, BBC TV’s Blue Peter Gardener and TV presenter, said: “Working with children and in schools, as I do, I can tell you that every child I engage with, out in the air, and touching the soil, automatically respond to working with plants and gardens. It is really important to nurture this interest from an early age and it is great that members of The National Gardens Scheme are laying on all these fun and educational activities, specifically with children in mind. There is much more to gardening than Latin names and striped lawns, as the NGS continues to demonstrate.”

The Gipsy House garden belonging to the late Roald Dahl opens on 17 July. This small garden in Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire is full of surprises, and inspired many of Mr. Dahl’s best-selling children’s books. Featuring with the Witches Tree (the home of Fantastic Mr. Fox and his family), a walled terraced vegetable garden with a greenhouse containing James' giant peaches and nectarines and the Danny Champion of the World's caravan, nestling under a tree house, this enchanting garden is a must see.

The Mount, a family garden in Essex which boasts a meadow with wide walkways winding through the trees, will be opening on 6 and 24 August. Spread over 8 acres, the garden is split into 8 separate areas and planted with a wide variety of plants and shrubs. A great hit with the kids is the superb Model Railway.

Opening on 13 July and 3 August, Ochran Mill in Gwent is a Grade II listed water mill on one and half acres of garden. It features large colour-themed herbaceous borders, bog garden, shrub borders, gravel and grasses, woodland borders, large water feature and rose and clematis pergola. There is also a field for picnics and stream to play in as well as a pinball and arcade collection which is very popular with non-gardeners and children.

On 4 and 11 July, families can visit Copt Howe in Cumbria a 2-acre plantsman’s mountain paradise garden. With a wildlife sanctuary complete with red squirrels, badgers, slow-worms, a hotel for wild birds, superb views of Langdale Pikes and extensive plant collections – there is something for all ages to enjoy.

An international quirky themed fantasy garden awaits those who visit Caereuni in North Wales in July and August. Featuring a Japanese smoke water garden, old ruin, Spanish courtyard, Welsh gold mine, Chinese peace garden, woodman's lodge, jungle, Mexican chapel, 1950s petrol garage – this 20 year old garden won’t disappoint.

Full details of garden openings can be found in the NGS’s Yellow Book 2008 (available from all good book stores priced at £7.99 or direct from the NGS, tel. 01483 211535) or by visiting www.ngs.org.uk. Membership of the NGS is also available at £25 a year, which includes a copy of the Yellow Book, priority booking on a range of garden tours, talks and workshops hosted by gardening experts, two for one entry at selected attractions, a twice yearly newsletter and e-news bulletins.

Founded in 1927, the NGS has raised £42 million for charity since its launch, £23 million in the last 10 years alone.

It's good to be green

In today's world we are all keen to teach our children to protect the world around us. With this in mind the BBC have launched a program on their Cbeebies channel called Eco-beebies to spread the word to even the youngest of children that it is good to be green. While I'm not a huge fan of TV this one has been a hit with even my 2 year old.

Even if you can't catch the television programme be sure to check out the excellent website.

I'm currently printing the 'green star chart' for the children of our home school co-op and I'm sure we'll also be making our own mini garden at home.

If you need more ideas to help spread the 'green message' to your children, don't forget to check out our Recycling For Kids section.

Beijing Olympics mascots - and coloring pages!

Bei Jing Huan Ying Ni !

There has always been a tradition of symbolism in China, and this summer's Olympic mascots are a fascinating example of how that tradition has been put to use which would make an interesting study with your children.

This is from the official site:

"Like the Five Olympic Rings from which they draw their color and inspiration, Fuwa will serve as the Official Mascots of Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, carrying a message of friendship and peace - and good wishes from China - to children all over the world.

Designed to express the playful qualities of five little children who form an intimate circle of friends, Fuwa also embody the natural characteristics of four of China's most popular animals - the Fish, the Panda, the Tibetan Antelope, the Swallow - and the Olympic Flame.

Each of Fuwa has a rhyming two-syllable name - a traditional way of expressing affection for children in China. Beibei is the Fish, Jingjing is the Panda, Huanhuan is the Olympic Flame, Yingying is the Tibetan Antelope and Nini is the Swallow.

When you put their names together - Bei Jing Huan Ying Ni - they say "Welcome to Beijing," offering a warm invitation that reflects the mission of Fuwa as young ambassadors for the Olympic Games." Read more

I have just added a collection of coloring pages for the "fuwa", or mascots, which I think are very cute - I hope you agree!

Craft inspiration

I came across this website recently with the most wonderful art and craft projects. Some are quite involved and more suited to older children but there is plenty for younger children to have fun with too. All the projects are clearly explained with great photographs. I especially liked Project #12 Watercolour Flowers and Project #20 Monoprints and can't wait to try these out at home with my family.

Nim's Island

The family film, Nim's Island (based on the book of the same name by Wendy Orr) is currently showing in cinemas across the land. I recently saw this along with my children and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

The main star of the film is Nim, a young girl who lives with her father, a marine biologist, on a remote island. She is home schooled and spends her time surrounded by exotic animals or escaping with her favourite books. However disaster strikes when her father fails to return from a sailing expedition. Nim then turns to the hero of her favourite book, Alex Rover, for help via e-mail. But it turns out that the author with whom she is communicating is nothing like her hero. I don't want to spoil the story by giving away too many details, but both characters have to learn to overcome difficulties, and there is a happy ending :-)

Whilst adults may find large parts of the plot rather inplausible, the scenery is stunning and my children thought the film was great fun. They especially liked the fact that main character was an all-action girl. All in all a big thumbs up from us.

Free Charlie and Lola puppet show (London)

I was sent a press release today about a free Charlie and Lola puppet show event in London in August. Being a huge fan of the Charlie and Lola books, I thought I'd post it up here so that any Londoners can make a note in their diaries! NB: Although the puppet show is free, you will need to phone to book places (details below)...

CHARLIE AND LOLA
MAKE AN EVERSO EXCITING TRIP TO HARRODS
Sibling duo star in their absolutely completely brilliant puppet show this August

The award-winning Charlie and Lola will perform for Harrods customers this August in an exciting puppet show based on the hit television episode ‘I will not ever, never eat a tomato’.

A dedicated area in the Toy Kingdom of iconic British department store Harrods will see a series of performances of the enchanting and delightful sibling duo in a live puppet show. Taking place on Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st August this is a one-off weekend of sibling fun from the beloved Charlie and Lola and highly recommended for an afternoon of amusement for parents and their little ones.

The shows – happening 11 times throughout the weekend – will take place in a specially created Charlie and Lola area where kids and their parents will get a chance to see the brand new toys available plus catch up on some of the classic TV episodes being screened on DVD.

CHARLIE AND LOLA PUPPET SHOW
‘I will not ever, never eat a tomato’ based on the books by Lauren Child and inspired by the award-winning TV show created by Tiger Aspect, is a puppet show performed in the Japanese style of puppetry called Ban Raku and has previously toured shopping centres across the US and Southern England.

Lola will not eat peas. In fact, she won't eat carrots, potatoes, mushrooms, eggs, sausages, cauliflower, cabbage or baked beans. And she will absolutely not EVER NEVER eat a tomato.

Then Charlie has a great idea. He tells Lola that peas are green drops from Greenland, and that carrots are orange twigs from Jupiter, then Lola decides she might just try one or two.

The story offers a fun and ingenious solution to a problem that can turn into a daily battle between a parent and child and is one which both can enjoy together.

PERFORMANCE TIMES
Each puppet show session will last 15 minutes and take place at the following times:

Saturday 30th August - 11am, 12pm, 1pm, 2pm, 3pm, 4pm
Sunday 31st August - 12pm, 1pm, 2pm, 3pm, 4pm

Tickets are free, must be reserved in advance and based on a first-come, first-served basis. To book a space at one of the extremely exciting shows please call 02072256781.

CHARLIE AND LOLA TOYS
Toy manufacturers Golden Bear will be showcasing their brand new Charlie and Lola toy range at this much-anticipated event. This year sees the launch of a beautiful new wooden collection which will delight fans of the loveable characters. Soft toys and create and play activity items are also available. Watch out for the brand new Colour-In Lola, Chattering Charlie and Lola, Charlie and Lola Make and Play Card Playsets, Wooden Playhouse with accessory sets and much more.

Finger Knitting Fun

We have been having fun playing with wool recently. While my 10 year old can now knit quite well (thanks Grandma!), my other children still found it frustrating. However this frustration was solved when we discovered finger knitting. We started with single finger knitting which is very simple, all you need is yarn (thick yarn gives best results) and fingers! There is an excellent demonstration here:

From this we progressed on to four finger knitting - this is slightly more demanding but gives you a more versatile end product (think toy scarves instead of belts!). These two videos show different techniques for finger knitting - personally I prefer the second method but just love the presentation in both...

I now make sure that we have some yarn with us for long car journeys and have a simple way to keep children occupied. Why not give it a try?

Poem for Father's Day

I've been trying to help my own children think of what to do for dad on Father's Day this weekend. When looking for a verse for a card we came across this:

"Walk a little slower, Daddy!" said a little child so small.
"I'm following in your footsteps and I don't want to fall.

Sometimes your steps are very fast, sometimes they're hard to see;
So walk a little slower Daddy, for you are leading me.

Someday when I'm all grown up, you're what I want to be.
Then I will have a little child who'll want to follow me.

And I would want to lead just right, and know that I was true;
So, walk a little slower, Daddy, for I must follow you."

It would be ideal for a gift, perhaps with some painted footprints along side (always a nice momento of children's growth). Or maybe it could be written on one of the printables here.

I'm sure dad will love his gift in whatever form it finally takes and enjoy spending Father's Day with his family.

Fun website

We've been having fun exploring this website: activitytv.com
(NB. no link with Activity Village!). There are lots of great videos to check out all aimed at children, and each activity also has printable instructions available. The activities range from crafts to science experiments, juggling to cartooning, with lots more besides.

With Father's Day fast approaching, this card craft might be ideal:

Pop-up Card

The one possible drawback, as with all sites with videos, is that you do need a fairly fast internet connection or playback is very slow or disjointed.

Teddy Mascots - a patriotic craft idea!

Sarah, Jack and Sam have had fun this week kitting out the teddies in their house ready for the Olympics - or any patriotic event of holiday, such as Fourth of July or Canada Day. They have used our flag printables and a bit of imagination and I'm sure you will agree that the result is great! Great fun if you want to hold your own Olympic Games, too.

We liked this clever recycling craft idea from "Nini Makes", which makes use of the plastic lids from fruit containers (the sort you by strawberries in at the supermarket).

Fathers having fun with the kids!

It is all too easy with our busy lives for working parents to slip in to a tendency of seeing children as ‘work’ rather than people to relax and have fun with. With Father’s Day fast approaching perhaps it is time to encourage dads to have fun with the kids. Hopefully you will find some useful ideas below:
- build a den - blankets, pillows, chairs etc.
- read a story by torchlight
- go for a hike (without mum)
- play a game of cards (see here for card games)
- bake a cake!
- simple woodwork - possibly a balsa wood project, or simple hammer and nails
- set up a town / garage / railway using all the cars, trains, lego, wooden bricks and other bits and pieces you can find
- play marbles
- make a treasure hunt
- set up an obstacle course
- put up a tent in the garden - either a real one or a play one using a clothes line and a large blanket
- play catch, football, baseball - basically any sports
- plan and then put on a puppet show (for Mum?)
- build boats from recycled containers and find somewhere to sail them
- make up a story - children especially enjoy ones which feature themselves as characters, albeit doing extraordinary things!
- play a simple game – Simon Says (or perhaps Dad Says) for example (see here for more ideas).

Or perhaps Dad has some activities he enjoys which might be great for sharing with the children. Does he have a favourite TV show/film – maybe from his childhood - which he could share? Maybe he enjoys quizzes (such as those on-line at www.sporcle.com) or chess – do not assume that kids are too young to join in with these things, they may have lots of fun together.

But don't expect too much. If Dad has had a bad week don't expect him to spend all weekend with the kids. Encourage him to spend a couple of quality hours with them and then maybe send him off for a bit of well earned R&R!
